Ok…so I don’t know if this is technically classified as a “chronicle.” But I thought since there were a series of Dodge van pics that that title would be appropriate. :) I actually have been compelled to write about…well…moving. The van represents the act of moving a friend’s stuff from one place to the next. This weekend, it was actually two friends (i.e. two moves; one weekend).
I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of anyone ever saying “I just LOVE moving!” Never heard that from anyone. What I have heard is “I HATE moving!” or “Moving really sucks.” etc. etc. You get the point. These words have flown from my lips numerous times in my life, but not this weekend. And the reason has not escaped my thoughts for the last 24 hours.

Well, we have made it to day 5 of parenthood…so far no one has been injured.
WHO NEEDS SLEEP? Nash, Ines and I are all doing well…minus a little prime time sleep (meaning between 12am-7am). We have had two mornings in a row of AWESOME sleep between 7am-10am. What a blessing those 3-hour stretches of uninterrupted sleep are to us!
PRAYER REQUEST: The being awake continually throughout the night has been rough on Ines so please pray for her and Nash as they get into a routine. We are going to get pump connections this week so that I can help out with nighttime feedings. In the meantime, I’ve tried to be encouraging by staying awake with them, assisting where I can, and helping change diapers (haven’t graduated to solo on this yet).

THANKS: So many people have written, called, and visited to express their excitement for Nash’s arrival. Ines and I are truly grateful for each and everyone of you. We send a special shout out to Rachel Pinto for organizing meals for us starting on Wednesday. Thanks to Stacey McBryde, Barbara McBryde, and Dana Velasquez for all the meals you’ve provided us this weekend! You can imagine what a relief it is to not have to think about cooking!
LAUGHING: Besides some lost sleep, we’ve enjoyed LOTS of laughter! Last night we had just finished giving him a sponge bath and putting on a fresh diaper when we heard a LOUD noise from his special delivery place. It was so funky, but we just laughed until our bellies hurt. Another time we had just finished changing his diaper when he shot a jet stream of pee up in the air and over his left shoulder spraying the crib and a bit of the bedroom wall. We were both so surprised by it that we just froze for a bit. Then we through a wipey over him and laughed hysterically.
PRAISE: I PRAISE the Lord for our new son Nash! He is a wonderful gift from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth. Every good and perfect gift comes from above, and my wife and I recognize that our healthy baby boy is a miracle from Him. Please join us in celebrating this new life and addition to our family.

When I was in seminary (Jan. 1999 to Dec. 2000) I decided to let my hair grow out. I had always wanted to have long hair, long enough to put in a pony tail. Don't ask me why. I just did.
See ->
So after trying out the earthy hippy look (I even worked in a backpacking shop), I grew tired of the long locks (or reality set in) and I chopped off the do.
This was when I first realized how bad some people were at giving compliments. Matter of fact, what they gave did not qualify (IMHO) as a compliment.
Check the difference:
COMPLIMENT #1: "Wow! Your hair looks SOOOOOO much better!!!!"
COMPLIMENT #2: "Wow! Your hair looks great!!!"
See the subtle difference?
The first attempt at flattery included a backhanded insult whereas the latter was just flattery.
So if any of those people who blew their chance at a qualified compliment back then, here's another opportunity.

29Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:29

Ines would NEVER tell you this herself, but she is a tremendously gifted speaker and teacher. Whether the topic is cultural competency, multi-ethnic ministry or Latino issues, she has natural ability to present important truths with practical content that is both engaging and impactful.
I started this website for Ines months ago. It merely had a landing page with a Twitter feed and audio download of Ines’ testimony. The other night I was motivated to move it forward again and start over with a Joomla! powered website packed with media functionality. The site will grow over time, but this is a start.

Ines has spoken on cultural competency to Heifer International, the National Association of Social Workers, and at several ministry conferences over the last seven years. Earlier this year, she shared her testimony at a women’s retreat for Fellowship North. You can listen to it on her website (streaming or downloadable MP3).
She will be giving birth to our first child literally any day now, but we look forward to finding opportunities for her to speak at businesses, churches, and conferences towards the end of the year.
